Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), stated that the autocratic government in power sought to sustain itself through corruption, destroying the future of the nation. Speaking virtually as the chief guest at a BNP divisional training workshop titled “31-Point Framework for State Reform and Public Engagement” on Tuesday (December 10), Rahman highlighted the resilience of BNP leaders and activists despite enduring 15 years of oppression.

Addressing participants at the event held at an auditorium in Cumilla city, Rahman said, “BNP activists have been subjected to abductions, murders, and persecution over the years. Despite all of this, the BNP remains the largest political force in the country, with the public looking to it for hope and leadership. This is in stark contrast to the ruling Awami League, which has relied on corruption to maintain its grip on power.”

Rahman emphasized the importance of the 31-point framework, describing it as a comprehensive vision for rebuilding the nation. He noted that while various individuals and organizations have proposed reforms in recent months, BNP had initiated this discussion over two years ago.

“We always knew the autocratic government would fall, though we were uncertain about the timing. While many doubted this, we continued to plan for reforms. BNP’s primary goal is to work for the people of Bangladesh,” Rahman said.

Highlighting the need for accountability, Rahman remarked, “People often say they wish Bangladesh could be like London or America. However, if we can ensure accountability at every level, we won’t need to rely on such comparisons. Our goal is to establish a government that is answerable to the people and prioritizes their interests.”

Rahman also addressed the faith of the public in the BNP, cautioning party leaders and activists to maintain this trust through responsible behavior. He said, “The people’s confidence in us is evident, but it is our responsibility to preserve this trust. Our conduct must inspire and attract others.”

Reflecting on the sacrifices made by BNP leaders and activists, Rahman said, “My father was martyred for the nation. My brother was also martyred. My mother endured imprisonment and suffering, stories known to all. Many BNP families have similar experiences of loss and hardship. Yet, our activists have remained loyal to the party with a shared goal of establishing the rights of the people.”

Earlier in the day, the workshop was inaugurated by BNP National Standing Committee member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, with BNP Cumilla Divisional Organizational Secretary Selim Bhuiyan presiding over the session. The event was facilitated by BNP Training Secretary A.B.M. Mosharraf Hossain.

Other notable attendees included BNP Relief and Rehabilitation Secretary Aminur Rashid Yasin, Industry Secretary Abul Kalam, Media Cell Convenor Maudud Alamgir Pavel, Adviser to the Acting Chairman Mahadi Amin, and Cumilla Divisional Joint Organizational Secretary Md. Mostak Mia. Central and divisional leaders of the BNP were also present at the workshop.
