Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the BNP, has requested that his name not be associated with titles like Desh Nayak (National Leader) or Rashtra Nayak (Statesman). "As your colleague and leader, I urge you all, from today onward, not to use these titles with my name," he said.
Rahman made this statement on Tuesday, November 19, during a workshop titled "31-Point Agenda for Structural Reform and Public Engagement" held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers auditorium in Kakrail, Dhaka.
During the workshop, Tarique Rahman provided directives to party leaders and activists, emphasizing reforms, addressing unemployment, and proposing new governance strategies for the country.
Encouraging Economic Opportunities Beyond Garments and Remittance
Rahman highlighted the potential to explore new economic sectors outside the garment and remittance industries. "There is an opportunity to create vibrant new sectors and engage more people in outsourcing. The government must encourage this," he stated.
Referring to BNP's earlier initiatives, Rahman said, "When no one was thinking about these issues, BNP proposed 27 points for the nation." He reiterated that BNP is committed to governance reform, acknowledging both successes and shortcomings during its tenure.
Promoting Accountability and Voter Rights
Rahman emphasized the need for political accountability, stating, "Economic and political emancipation must go hand in hand. No reform will succeed if people are not politically free and leaders are not held accountable. Whether in government, opposition, or parliament, everyone must answer to the people. This is only possible by ensuring voting rights."
He called upon party leaders to take the 31-Point Agenda to grassroots levels through courtyard meetings and direct public engagement.
On Unemployment and Long-Term Goals
Rahman addressed the country's unemployment crisis, saying, "With over one crore unemployed individuals, we must explore avenues beyond garments and remittance. Change will not happen overnight, but if we work together, we can significantly reduce the challenges."
The workshop also featured discussions led by BNP’s National Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan and opinions from BNP leaders from the Dhaka division.
Rahman's appeal reflects his vision for reforms and inclusivity, urging collective efforts to achieve the nation’s economic and political goals.
