Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has extended support to the family of Mohammad Mahbub Alam, a student from Sherpur Government College who lost his life during an anti-discrimination protest last year. Mahbub, an honors student, tragically died on August 4, 2024, after being run over by a magistrate’s vehicle while participating in the movement.
On Sunday, January 12, Dr. Rafiqul Islam, BNP's Secretary for Health Affairs, visited Mahbub’s family in Taragar Kandapara, Sherpur Sadar Upazila, on behalf of Tarique Rahman. During the visit, Mahbub’s mother, Mosammat Mahfuza Khatun, broke down in tears as she recounted the events of her son’s death.
Also present during the visit were former Youth Affairs Health Sub-Secretary Dr. Jahangir Hossain and Dr. Khondaker Mahbub Alam. Tarique Rahman, through his representatives, provided financial assistance to Mahbub’s family, expressing his solidarity and commitment to standing by them during this difficult time.
Mahbub Alam’s death during the protest brought attention to the ongoing fight against systemic discrimination in the country. BNP leaders reiterated their commitment to supporting families affected by such incidents and vowed to continue advocating for justice and equality.
