In a speech on Saturday (November 16) at the third council of the Nationalist Textile Engineers Association (JETEB) in Dhaka, BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman stated that the public would not tolerate incompetence in government administration. He emphasized that while three months is insufficient to resolve the damage created by the previous "mafia government," any success or failure of the current government should be open to public scrutiny after this period.
Tarique made these remarks at the Engineers Institute of Bangladesh (IEB), where the session was inaugurated by BNP’s Standing Committee member A Z M Zahid Hossain and chaired by JETEB's convener Fakhrul Alam. Tarique Rahman also participated virtually as the chief guest during the second session of the event.
During the event, Fakhrul Alam was elected as president, and A K M Ruhul Amin Akand was chosen as the general secretary through a secret vote.
Tarique Rahman pointed out that the government’s inefficiency could be viewed as a failure by the public if urgent issues like the rehabilitation and treatment of injured citizens were not prioritized. He questioned why these critical issues were not at the top of the government's agenda, stressing the importance of competent governance.
Referring to the past 15 years under the autocratic government, Tarique remarked that the country had become dependent on imports, foreign aid, and loans. He emphasized that Bangladesh needed to break free from this cycle and work towards prosperity, specifically focusing on making the garment sector more profitable and increasing demand in global markets. He also highlighted BNP's plans to encourage foreign investment in small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Tarique added that a country’s political health directly impacts its economic growth, noting the country's decline under the previous regime’s so-called mega-projects, the true impact of which is now becoming evident.
He discussed BNP’s 31-point agenda for the country’s future development, stating that this program would serve as an historical foundation for Bangladesh’s progress. He stressed the importance of practical and quality education and viewed the country's population not as a curse but as a strength if transformed into human capital.
Tarique also acknowledged the interim government's initiative to reform the Election Commission, expressing the public's hopes for a transparent and impartial electoral process. He stated that the government's efforts to establish voting rights would strengthen its relationship with the people.
He concluded by stating that the goal is to improve the living standards of the people, enhance the education system, create employment opportunities, improve healthcare, and ensure security. Tarique mentioned that whenever BNP has had the chance to govern with the people’s vote, it has worked towards these objectives.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP’s Secretary General, expressed support for the interim government’s reform efforts, specifically regarding elections, and called for continuous vigilance and participation in the movement for democratic restoration.
Other leaders present at the event included BNP’s Standing Committee members Abdul Moin Khan, Vice-Chairpersons Joyal Abedin, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Nittai Roy Chowdhury, and various district-level leaders from the organization.
