Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has stated that the BNP remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding democracy, accountability, the rule of law, good governance, justice, and humanity. He emphasized that the political fate of Bangladesh must be determined solely by its people.

Speaking at an Iftar event hosted by the BNP in Dhaka on Thursday (March 6), Fakhrul addressed foreign diplomats, editors of newspapers, television channels, online portals, and development partners. The event, held at the Westin Hotel in the capital, was attended by top BNP leaders, including Fakhrul, and prominent diplomats such as British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke, former US Ambassador John Danilovich, Pakistani Ambassador Syed Ahmed Maroof, and Turkish Ambassador Ramis Sen.

In his brief remarks before Iftar, Fakhrul expressed hope that the global community and development partners would respect the principles of "non-interference," "sovereignty," and "peaceful resolution of disputes" to ensure collective progress. He reiterated the BNP's desire to work closely with international partners to advance democracy and liberal trade partnerships in the region.

Fakhrul highlighted the importance of justice, resilience, and unity, stating, "The people of Bangladesh deserve a future free from fear, oppression, and political uncertainty. The path forward is clear: a swift return to democracy through free and fair elections."

He also reflected on the significance of the August 5 mass uprising, describing it as a manifestation of the people's enduring frustration with the "fascist Hasina government." Fakhrul asserted that the movement was not spontaneous but part of a long-standing struggle by pro-democracy forces in Bangladesh, led by the BNP and other democratic parties.

The Iftar event saw the participation of senior journalists, editors, and analysts, including Shafik Rehman, Matiur Rahman of Prothom Alo, Mahfuz Anam of The Daily Star, and ABM Bahauddin of Inqilab. Diplomats from countries such as the United States, Germany, China, India, the European Union, Russia, Japan, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Norway were also present.

BNP leaders, including members of the party's standing committee, vice-chairmen, and advisors, joined the event. Fakhrul extended greetings on behalf of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, engaging in discussions with diplomats and development partners.

The BNP's Iftar gathering underscored the party's efforts to strengthen international ties and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values, as it seeks to reconnect with the people and advocate for a fair electoral process in Bangladesh.
