Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, emphasized the importance of reforms alongside elections while addressing political parties regarding upcoming polls. In his speech to the nation at 7 PM on Sunday, marking the interim government’s 100 days, Dr. Yunus called for collective efforts to achieve long-term reforms vital for the country's future.
Dr. Yunus stated, “Speak freely about elections and share your thoughts without hesitation. However, I urge you to address the topic of reforms as well. Reforms are the lifeblood of our nation’s long-term vitality and will provide opportunities for our youth to create a new world.”
He further stressed that reforms are not just about the election process but also about building a sustainable system to avert recurring political crises. Dr. Yunus highlighted the role of the Constitutional Reform Commission, which seeks input from all political parties and citizens to refine electoral laws. This process will run parallel to updating the voter list.
The Chief Adviser requested patience and cooperation, stating, “We aim to create an election system that will serve as a model for generations. This requires time and your trust.” He pledged to carry out essential reforms before holding elections, ensuring they are free, fair, and sustainable.
He added, “The train of elections has started, and it will not stop. However, we must lay the necessary tracks along the way through political consensus.” He hinted at potential delays in elections if additional time is required to finalize critical reforms.
Highlighting progress in governance, Dr. Yunus revealed:
- Judiciary: Appointment of 23 new High Court judges and the reinstatement of the Supreme Judicial Council to discipline corrupt judges.
- Anti-Corruption Efforts: Reformation of the Anti-Corruption Commission is nearing completion. Investigations against 79 individuals accused of corruption and money laundering have begun, while a list of 150 influential suspects has been prepared.
- Public Service: Over 19,000 officers were promoted, 13,000 transferred, and 12,000 faced disciplinary actions.
- Legislation: Repeal of the controversial Cyber Security Act and withdrawal of cases violating freedom of speech. Additionally, 133 laws have been amended or introduced, and 353 key policy decisions have been implemented.
Dr. Yunus appealed to citizens across all sectors—political parties, youth, women, students, and professionals—to support the government’s efforts. “We may leave in two days, but the historical opportunities created during this period must not be wasted. Stand firm for the reforms that will shape the nation’s future,” he urged.
The Chief Adviser reiterated his commitment to creating a transparent, efficient, and inclusive system, ensuring long-term stability and prosperity for Bangladesh.
