Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over the requisition of government transport buses to bring representatives from outside Dhaka to the unveiling ceremony of the newly formed political party, the National Citizen Party (NCP). TIB stated that such misuse of power and unethical practices at the very inception of the party cannot be overlooked, and the interim government cannot evade responsibility for allowing such actions.

In a statement issued on Saturday, March 1, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman emphasized that the NCP and its leaders, activists, and supporters must commit to avoiding such authoritarian practices, especially under the banners of "Second Republic" and "New Political Arrangement." He urged the party to distance itself from old, autocratic habits and to embrace ethical and transparent political practices.

Dr. Zaman noted that the emergence of a new political party led by students, who have played a significant role in the movement for a "New Bangladesh," could be a crucial milestone in the post-authoritarian era. The expectations of the people are high, particularly for a party inspired by anti-discrimination ideals and led by young leaders. However, he warned that the party must address the negative implications of the bus requisition incident and avoid such self-destructive actions in the future.

"The new political party, born out of the student movement, has the potential to lead the country out of the culture of zero-sum politics and misuse of power. However, any repetition of authoritarian practices or misuse of power by the new leadership will create negative perceptions among the public and hinder the development of accountable democratic practices in the New Bangladesh," Dr. Zaman said.

He further added that the new party could play a catalytic role in transforming the culture of authoritarian behavior in politics, governance, and public representation. However, its success will depend on how effectively it can distance itself from the long-standing practices of power abuse in the country's political landscape.

Dr. Zaman also highlighted the responsibility of the interim government to refrain from providing any form of patronage to political groups at all levels. He stressed that the government must ensure a level playing field for all political entities and avoid actions that could undermine public trust in the political process.

The TIB executive director called on the NCP to treat the bus requisition incident as a "red alert" and to take immediate steps to ensure that such practices are not repeated. He emphasized that the party's commitment to ethical and transparent politics will be crucial in gaining public trust and contributing to the development of a democratic and accountable political culture in Bangladesh.

The NCP, formed with the participation of student leaders and activists from the anti-discrimination movement, has been seen as a potential force for change in the country's political landscape. However, its ability to live up to public expectations will depend on its adherence to ethical practices and its rejection of the old, autocratic habits that have long plagued Bangladeshi politics.

TIB's statement underscores the importance of ethical governance and transparency in the operations of new political entities, particularly in a context where public trust in political institutions is often low. The organization's call for accountability and ethical practices reflects the broader aspirations of the people for a more democratic and inclusive political system in Bangladesh.
