Gazipur Metropolitan Police advises alternate routes as 20-kilometer congestion disrupts Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways
For the past 30 hours, workers of TNZ Group in Gazipur's Maleker Bari area have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in protest, demanding overdue wages. This blockade has led to a nearly 20-kilometer traffic jam, severely impacting commuters traveling to and from Dhaka, Mymensingh, Tangail, and other districts. In response, Gazipur Metropolitan Police has urged travelers to use alternative routes to ease congestion.
An announcement on the Gazipur Metropolitan Police's official Facebook page informed travelers on the Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways that the blockade, initially set up by garment workers near the Colombia Garments area between Vogra Bypass and Maleker Bari, remains in effect as of 3:30 PM.
Deputy Commissioner of Traffic, Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Ibrahim Khan, shared that various police units, including Crime and Traffic Divisions, as well as Industrial Police, have been present since the protests began on Saturday. Despite repeated requests to clear the road, the workers continue to protest, stating that their wages have not been paid. The factory management had previously committed to disbursing salaries on Thursday, following a promise made last Tuesday, but failed to do so.
The authorities have made several appeals to the workers to vacate the highway, emphasizing that the blocked route is essential for heavy commuter flow and serves a vital industrial region.
