A train heading toward Kamalapur smashed into a private car stranded at the Moghbazar rail crossing in Dhaka on Sunday evening, December 1. Fortunately, the car's driver noticed the approaching train and exited the vehicle in time, averting any casualties.
The Incident: A Narrow Escape
The accident occurred around 6:15 PM, as reported by eyewitnesses and the police. The private car became stuck at the rail crossing due to heavy traffic on the road. As the Kamalapur-bound train approached, the crossing’s lineman lowered the barrier, signaling the train's arrival. However, the car, trapped amidst the traffic, could not move forward or reverse in time.
Realizing the imminent danger, the driver quickly abandoned the car and moved to safety. There were no passengers in the vehicle at the time. Moments later, the train collided with the car, severely damaging it. The force of the collision also affected nearby vehicles, causing minor damage to several of them.
Police and Witness Accounts
According to the police, the incident did not result in any injuries or fatalities. After the collision, most of the surrounding vehicles managed to leave the area. However, the private car was too damaged to be moved manually and had to be towed away by a wrecker. The car was later taken to the local police station for further assessment.
One witness described the scene: “The train hit the car with such force that it was completely crushed. Thankfully, the driver had the presence of mind to get out before it was too late. It could have been much worse.”

While no one was harmed, the incident has reignited concerns about the safety of railway crossings in Dhaka, especially in congested areas. Rail crossings in the city often face issues with traffic congestion, poor enforcement of rules, and inadequate warning systems. These factors contribute to accidents and near-misses, particularly during rush hours.
Authorities have been urged to implement stricter traffic control measures at crossings and improve coordination between train schedules and road traffic management.
No Casualties, but a Warning
Although this incident ended without injury, it serves as a reminder of the risks associated with rail crossings in urban areas. The quick thinking of the driver prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. However, the event highlights the need for better infrastructure and stricter safety protocols to ensure such close calls are minimized in the future.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, while the damaged car remains in their custody.
