Trainee doctors from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and other hospitals across the country have declared an indefinite strike, demanding an increase in their monthly allowance from BDT 25,000 to BDT 50,000. They have announced that they will not vacate Shahbagh intersection until a formal notification (gazette) is issued addressing their demand.
The protest began on Sunday morning (December 22) in front of the administrative building of BSMMU. Both residential and non-residential trainee doctors joined the sit-in demonstration.
The protesting doctors stated that the current allowance of BDT 25,000 is insufficient to sustain their families, especially in the context of rising inflation and escalating living costs. They emphasized that the allowance must be raised to BDT 50,000 to ensure a sustainable livelihood.
According to the demonstrators, their demand for an increased allowance has been ongoing for the past three years. They alleged that the government has consistently ignored their grievances, with the ruling Awami League attempting to undermine the movement by labeling it as influenced by Jamaat-e-Islami and other opposition groups.
The protesters urged the authorities to meet their demands without further delay and issue the necessary notification. They warned that they would not end their sit-in or return to their duties until their demands are addressed.
A six-member delegation of trainee doctors was sent to the Secretariat for discussions with government officials. The delegation stated that if their demands are not met during these discussions, they will announce further programs to intensify their movement.
The strike has brought attention to the challenges faced by trainee doctors, who play a crucial role in the healthcare system. Despite their significant contributions, they argue that their current financial support fails to reflect their responsibilities and the rising cost of living.
The protest continues to disrupt activities at Shahbagh intersection, as the trainee doctors remain firm in their resolve, awaiting a positive outcome from the ongoing discussions.
