The trainee doctors, who were protesting at Shahbagh intersection demanding an increase in their monthly allowance, have ended their road blockade following assurances from Sarjis Alam, a prominent leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

On Sunday afternoon (December 22), Sarjis Alam engaged in discussions with the protesting doctors at Shahbagh. During the meeting, he provided assurances regarding their demands and the steps that would be taken to address them. Following his intervention, the protesters decided to withdraw their blockade.

The trainee doctors had been occupying Shahbagh earlier in the day as part of an indefinite strike. Their demonstration highlighted the financial difficulties they face due to the current allowance structure and demanded immediate action from the authorities to raise their monthly allowance from BDT 25,000 to BDT 50,000.

Sarjis Alam’s assurance marked a turning point in the situation, as the protesting doctors expressed trust in his commitment to advocate for their cause. While the road blockade has been lifted, the trainee doctors have emphasized that they remain vigilant and hopeful that concrete steps will be taken to fulfill their demands in the near future.

The protest, which had disrupted traffic in one of Dhaka's busiest areas, ended peacefully, restoring normalcy to the Shahbagh intersection by Sunday evening.
