In a tragic incident on the 20th of December, two of the three individuals arrested in connection with the death of BUET student Muhtasim Masud have tested positive for drugs. The student was killed when a private car hit him while he was standing at a police checkpoint on the 300-foot road in the Proutachol area, Rupganj.
Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Mehedi Islam from Narayanganj informed that the drug test was conducted at the Narayanganj General Hospital on Friday, December 20. The suspects, Mobin Al Mamun, Mirajul Karim, and Asif Chowdhury, were all tested, with Mobin and Mirajul testing positive for drugs.
Muhtasim Masud’s father, Masud Mia, filed a case on Friday morning at Rupganj Police Station regarding the incident. The case has been filed under the Road Transport Act, and the three arrested individuals have been named as the suspects in the case.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), Muhtasim Masud, a student at BUET, left his home on his motorcycle on the night of December 19. He went out with two of his friends and visited the Nila Market, where they had dinner. Around 3:00 AM on the following day, while returning home, their motorcycle was stopped at a police checkpoint near Nila Market. During this time, a car, speeding through the checkpoint, hit their motorcycle. The collision led to the immediate death of Muhtasim Masud, while the other two passengers, Mehdi Hasan Khan and Amit Saha, were injured. Mehdi was hospitalized at Square Hospital, and Amit was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The police found a can of beer and an empty bottle of liquor during the car search, as per the details mentioned in the case.
After the case was filed, the three arrested individuals were sent for drug testing at the hospital. Police have already requested a five-day remand for the suspects to investigate further, with the hearing scheduled for Sunday.
The incident took place late on the night of December 19 on the 300-foot road of Eastrachol Township. Muhtasim Masud was standing at a police checkpoint when the private car hit him. The car was driven by Mobin Al Mamun, who is the son of retired Brigadier General Abdullah Al Mamun of the Bangladesh Army. The registration of the vehicle was also under the name of the former military officer.
In an interview at the Narayanganj court complex on Friday, Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that his son had a valid driving license but declined to comment further on the incident.
