The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reversed its earlier decision to cut food aid for Rohingya refugees to $6 per person per month. In a recent letter, the organization confirmed that the revised monthly allocation will now be $12 per individual.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman confirmed the update on Thursday. He noted that the previous allocation stood at $12.50, meaning there is still a reduction of 50 cents per person.
He explained that the deducted amount was previously used for food fortification—adding essential nutrients to the food—which may no longer be feasible with the new budget.
Mizanur Rahman believes that Bangladesh’s diplomatic efforts and the visit of the UN Secretary-General contributed to the reconsideration of the earlier decision.
