A woman Union Parishad (UP) member from Narail has died after allegedly being gang-raped. The 52-year-old reserved female member of Maijpara Union passed away on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Jessore General Hospital.

According to her family, the victim was returning home on Tuesday around 5 PM after collecting goods from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB). She received a phone call from a man named Rajibul, who summoned her to settle a financial matter. Upon arriving near Daulatpur village at a house belonging to Moktar Molya, Rajibul and several others allegedly assaulted her. When the victim threatened to report the incident, the perpetrators forced poison into her mouth.

The victim returned home in shock and, out of fear, initially disclosed nothing about the assault. The following day, her health deteriorated, prompting her family to admit her to Jessore General Hospital. Despite medical treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on Friday morning.

Lipi Mollick, the victim’s daughter-in-law, recounted that her mother-in-law came home on Tuesday evening but became severely ill during the night, vomiting continuously. She added that the victim had revealed the assault and demanded justice for the perpetrators.

Before her death, the victim named two individuals—Rajibul and the elder son of Osman—along with others involved in the crime, according to her son. He stated that his mother provided these details to him directly before passing away.

Local representatives have also expressed their concerns. Akhtar Molya, a UP member of Maijpara Union, confirmed that the family had shared details of the incident and that the residents of the house where the assault occurred had informed the police. Maijpara Union Chairman Safura Khatun called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing that such a crime against a public representative demands accountability.

Sajedul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narail Sadar Police Station, confirmed that the police had been informed about the UP member’s death in Jessore. He assured that a full investigation is underway and that legal actions will follow based on the findings.
