The United States is working closely with Bangladesh’s interim government, according to John Kirby, the Strategic Communications Coordinator for the National Security Council at the White House.
In a briefing held on Thursday, December 12, Kirby provided insights into the ongoing engagement between the U.S. and Bangladesh. When asked about the situation in Bangladesh, he highlighted the U.S.'s focus on closely monitoring developments, particularly following the removal of the former Prime Minister and the challenges surrounding the country’s security landscape.
Addressing concerns raised during the briefing, where a reporter inquired about protests organized by Hindu groups in the U.S., Kirby acknowledged that the protests were a reaction to the recent violence against Hindus and temples in Bangladesh. The protests had taken place over several weeks, including one outside the White House over the weekend. The question also raised whether U.S. President Joe Biden had been made aware of the situation, particularly during his meeting with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a key advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, at the United Nations General Assembly.
Kirby assured that the Biden administration is closely monitoring the situation, stating, "We are looking at it very, very closely, and the President is certainly keeping a close eye on it." He further elaborated that the security situation in Bangladesh has become more challenging since the ousting of the former Prime Minister. As a result, the U.S. is working to enhance the interim government's capabilities in law enforcement and security services to better manage these challenges.
Kirby emphasized that during discussions with Bangladeshi leaders, the U.S. has made it clear that the protection of religious and ethnic minorities is a top priority. "We’ve been very clear with all Bangladeshi leaders that the protection of religious and ethnic minorities is of the utmost importance," he stated. He also added that the leaders of the interim government have repeatedly promised to ensure the security of all Bangladeshis, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity.
This ongoing U.S. involvement is indicative of its interest in ensuring stability and the protection of human rights in Bangladesh, particularly in light of the increasing tensions and protests related to the safety of religious minorities in the country.
