The Election Commission (EC) announced plans to finalize the draft voter list within the next two months and begin house-to-house data collection for voter list updates from March 2, 2025. Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Sanaullah shared these details during a press conference on Monday, December 2, after the commission's first meeting at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MM Nasir Uddin, included the participation of election commissioners Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Abdur Rahman Masud, Tahmida Ahmed, and Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah. Four separate committees were formed as part of the commission's agenda during the meeting.
Commissioner Sanaullah stated that data collected during the house-to-house voter update initiative will include eligible citizens who will be added as new voters for the 2026 elections. As per existing laws, the EC will compile and update voter lists systematically. The draft and final voter lists will be published between January 2 and March 2, 2025.
According to Sanaullah, the EC already has data on 17 million citizens eligible to become voters. Among them, data on 13 million individuals was collected in 2022, while the rest self-registered. However, statistics indicate that approximately 4.5 million people are eligible for inclusion as new voters, suggesting that 2.7 to 2.8 million eligible individuals are yet to be registered.
In light of this gap, the EC has decided to complete the current voter list update between January 2 and March 2, 2025. Following this, the EC will initiate house-to-house visits to collect data on eligible citizens who were missed, ensuring their inclusion in the voter list for the 2026 elections.
Additionally, the EC will gather information on deceased voters to remove their names from the list. This effort aims to create an accurate and updated voter database for the upcoming elections.
