Hasanat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the National Citizens' Party (NCP) for the southern region, has cautioned that certain political groups are attempting to bring back turmoil and fascism to the country. Speaking at a prayer and Iftar gathering honoring journalists in Comilla’s Devidwar Upazila on Saturday evening (March 8), he stated that the people had ousted fascism through movements, not to invite further adversity.
Addressing media professionals, Hasanat praised the courageous role journalists played during the July-August uprising, describing their efforts as unparalleled. He accused the previous Awami League government of suppressing press freedom and creating barriers for the media. “Today, journalists are working independently and presenting essential information to the public. I hope this objective journalism continues,” he said.
Hasanat emphasized the ongoing process of national reform and the transition toward democratic governance. He urged journalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to unbiased reporting, resisting pressure from political or coercive forces. “The NCP’s message to the people must be conveyed accurately and impartially through the media. This is our expectation,” he added.
Regarding the current state of law enforcement, Hasanat criticized the Awami League for previously using the police force as a tool for political gain. He called on law enforcement agencies to align their actions with the people’s expectations, rejecting any return to fascist practices. “The era of using the police for political purposes is over. The public demands a police force that serves their interests, not political agendas,” he asserted.
The event was attended by prominent journalists and local representatives, including Mohammad Kamal Uddin of Daily Samakal, Mohammad Abul Khayer of Daily Jugantor, Syed Khalilur Rahman Babul of Samakal, Mohammad Fakhrul Islam Sagar of Daily Naya Diganta, Saifuddin Roni of Global TV, and Mohammad Faruk Hossain Johnny of Daily Inqilab. Also present were student leaders and NCP representatives, including Kazi Nasir, Sajedul Rasheed Rafsan, Khairuzzaman Sabuj, Rakibul Islam Hridoy, Mahmudul Hasan, Tanvir Hasan Tushar, and Shamim Kausar.
Hasanat’s remarks underscored the importance of a free press and accountable law enforcement in building a democratic society, urging all stakeholders to work together to prevent the resurgence of authoritarianism.
