Thousands of workers from Beximco Group and Hamim Group have blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway in Gazipur since Thursday morning (November 21), demanding unpaid wages and the fulfillment of a 12-point demand, respectively. The blockade has caused a complete halt to vehicular movement on the highway.
According to sources from the industrial police and workers, around 40,000 workers from Beximco Industrial Park in Sarabo, Gazipur, are protesting for their unpaid October wages. This marks the sixth consecutive day of demonstrations. The workers have been occupying the highway near Chakrabarti area of Gazipur Metropolitan City since 9 AM, preventing traffic flow in the region.
Several workers expressed their frustration, stating that their protests will continue until their wages are fully paid.
Meanwhile, in Zirani, workers of Hamim Group’s That’s It Knit Limited factory have been staging demonstrations since Wednesday over a 12-point demand. On Thursday morning, they joined the highway blockade, further intensifying the disruption.
The industrial police, local police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and army personnel have been deployed to manage the situation and persuade workers to leave the roads.
Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, Mohammad Sarwar Alam, stated, “Efforts are underway to convince the workers to withdraw the blockade. Security forces, including the army, RAB, and police, are stationed at the protest sites in Chakrabarti and Zirani.”
The continued blockade has paralyzed traffic in the industrial zone, affecting commuters and supply chain operations, while the workers remain firm in their demands.
