Touhidul Islam, also known as Farid (32), a member of the Youth League, has been arrested for firing 28 shots at student protesters during the anti-discrimination movement in Chattogram. Police detained Touhidul on Friday night from Kamalnagar in Satkhira district. During interrogation, he admitted to firing the shots on July 18 in the city’s Bahaddarhat area.
Touhidul is reportedly a follower of Esrarul Haque, a former councilor of Chandgaon Ward. Police disclosed that he is accused in five murder cases and a total of 12 criminal cases.
Earlier, four other armed individuals involved in the protests had been arrested by RAB and city police. With Touhidul’s arrest, two more individuals connected to the violence have been apprehended. However, authorities are yet to recover the weapon used in the incident.
According to police, Touhidul used a shotgun during the protests and fired 28 rounds. Efforts are ongoing to recover the firearm. The violent crackdown on protesters between July 17 and August 4 resulted in 10 deaths and over 100 injuries in Chattogram.
Families of the victims have filed more than 25 cases in various police stations and courts, accusing prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League members, of orchestrating the violence.
Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Rois Uddin confirmed Touhidul’s confession and revealed his extensive criminal record, adding that the investigation and search for the weapon continue.
