The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has conducted a raid at the residence of Sitangshu Kumar (SK) Sur Chowdhury, a former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, who is currently under arrest in connection with a corruption case. During the operation, the ACC recovered 16.25 lakh taka in cash, savings certificates worth 4.5 crore taka, and documents related to fixed deposits, as confirmed by the commission.
On Sunday, ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Md. Akhtarul Islam stated that a team from the commission conducted the raid at SK Sur’s residence in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area. The operation was led by ACC Director Md. Saimuzzaman, who reported the recovery of cash, savings certificates, and fixed deposit documents during the search.
SK Sur Chowdhury was arrested by the ACC on January 14 in a case filed on December 23, 2024, for failing to submit his wealth statement. He was subsequently presented before the court after being shown as arrested in the case.
The allegations against SK Sur include acquiring illegal wealth. The ACC had ordered him to submit a detailed account of all immovable and movable assets, liabilities, sources of income, and acquisition details under his name and the names of his dependents. SK Sur acknowledged receipt of the order and the asset declaration form on October 27, 2024, but failed to comply within the stipulated 21 working days.
As a result, the ACC filed a case against him under Section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004. The case is currently under investigation.
The charges against SK Sur surfaced following allegations of his involvement in financial irregularities linked to the controversial PK Halder financial scandal. The ACC launched an inquiry against him in 2022, summoning him in March of that year for questioning.
SK Sur Chowdhury retired from his position as Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank in January 2018. His name has remained prominent in discussions surrounding corruption and financial mismanagement, with the latest raid further intensifying scrutiny of his alleged illegal activities.
