As tensions escalate along the India-Pakistan border, the effects are being felt beyond geopolitics, shaking even the world of cricket. Amid the volatile situation, concern has grown over the safety of two Bangladeshi cricketers—Rishad Hossain and Nahid Rana—who are currently in Pakistan participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stepped up to assure fans that the board is taking proactive measures to ensure the duo’s safety.
On Friday, May 9, BCB President Faruque Ahmed addressed the situation in a video message, confirming that the board has maintained close contact with PSL authorities as well as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to monitor and safeguard the well-being of the Bangladeshi players. In light of recent developments, the decision has been made to relocate the tournament to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and both Rishad and Nahid are expected to fly out later tonight.
Faruque explained that the deteriorating environment since Tuesday has caused significant concern within the BCB. With national team players stationed in a politically unstable region, the board began immediate and ongoing communication with stakeholders. Shahriar Nafees from BCB’s Cricket Operations Department has been in regular contact with PSL officials, while Faruque himself has spoken directly with the PSL’s CEO and sent personal messages to the PCB President to emphasize the urgency of the matter.
He added that the plan to move all foreign players to a safe location was reached collectively, not just by the BCB, but in coordination with PSL organizers and other relevant bodies. BCB has also established communication with the Bangladesh High Commission, signaling that the board is prepared to pursue diplomatic channels if necessary.
The BCB’s responsibility has extended beyond just the players. Two Bangladeshi sports journalists currently in Pakistan covering the PSL have also been included in the board’s safety considerations. Faruque mentioned that the board has identified these journalists by name and requested they be relocated alongside the players, reinforcing BCB’s stance that safeguarding all Bangladeshis involved in the tournament is a top priority.
In a time of increased geopolitical tension, BCB’s handling of the situation reflects a commendable sense of accountability and foresight. Cricket fans across Bangladesh remain hopeful that Rishad, Nahid, and the accompanying journalists will return home safely and without incident.
