A newly formed political party, Jatiya Oikya O Sanghati Parishad, has proposed the formation of a national government with Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the President and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman as the Prime Minister.

The party made the announcement during its official launch at the National Press Club on Monday, May 5. The event also featured a discussion session focused on the outline of a proposed national government, emphasizing unity and inclusive governance.

As part of the proceedings, the party unveiled a 20-member committee led by Convener Md. Nazimul Haque. Alongside the announcement of its leadership structure, the party presented a comprehensive proposal outlining the key figures and proportional representation in a future cabinet under a national government framework.

According to the proposal, Dr. Muhammad Yunus is to be appointed President, while Badiul Alam Majumdar is nominated for the role of Vice President. Tarique Rahman has been proposed as Prime Minister, with Dr. Shafiqur Rahman suggested as Deputy Prime Minister.

The party also presented a suggested allocation for cabinet positions based on proportional representation among allied political entities. Under the proposed scheme, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) would hold 25 percent of the cabinet, Jamaat-e-Islami 20 percent, the Nationalist Conservative Party (NCP) 15 percent, Islami Andolon 5 percent, individuals categorized as “special important persons” 10 percent, and other political parties would receive 25 percent of the remaining cabinet posts.

The launch event was attended by several academics and legal experts, including Dr. Saber Ahmed Chowdhury, Chair of the Peace and Conflict Studies Department at the University of Dhaka, Dr. Hasnan Ahmed, Chairman of the National Education and Service Council, and Advocate S.M. Formanul Islam of the Supreme Court.

The proposal comes at a time of significant political transition in Bangladesh following a student-led mass movement that altered the political landscape. The newly emerged party seeks to play a central role in shaping a unity-based administration that it claims would be inclusive and reflective of the country’s diverse political fabric.

While the idea of a national government has periodically surfaced in the country’s political discourse, the explicit nomination of individuals and proportional cabinet breakdown has generated renewed attention. Observers are now watching closely to gauge how major political parties and the public will respond to this proposal and the emergence of Jatiya Oikya O Sanghati Parishad on the national stage.
