BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has issued a correction regarding his recent comments about the removal of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait. Through a press release on Tuesday, he expressed regret for the unintended remarks and clarified the context surrounding his statement.
The statement reads, “On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 10:30 AM, during a free medical camp and blood donation event organized by BNP at the central office, some media reported my comments regarding the removal of Sheikh Mujib’s portrait from Bangabhaban.”
He clarified, “I was under the impression that the portrait of Sheikh Mujib had been removed from the Bangabhaban Darbar Hall, where portraits of all Presidents are displayed. However, it was actually moved from a different office room within Bangabhaban.”
The press release further stated, “An authoritarian government has made it mandatory by law to display Sheikh Mujib's portrait everywhere. Such laws, created by a fascist regime, hold no legitimacy. It is not appropriate to leave signs of misrule in every office. I apologize for my unintended comments.”
Earlier in the morning, during his speech at BNP’s event, Rizvi had remarked, “Contributions made by national figures must be acknowledged. If any wrongdoings occur, history and the public will judge them. The BNP does not have the narrow-mindedness seen in parties like Awami League.”
He added, “Sheikh Mujib’s portrait should not have been removed. It was inappropriate to take down Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait from Bangabhaban. Khandaker Mushtaq also took down his portrait, which was later restored by Ziaur Rahman.”
