A violent clash broke out at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) between activists of Chhatra Dal and supporters of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Tuesday afternoon. The confrontation stemmed from demands to ban student politics on campus.
At least 15 individuals from both sides were injured in the skirmish, and five people were taken into custody following the incident.
After the clashes, Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the National Citizens' Committee, shared images of the confrontation on his Facebook page. In the caption, he wrote, "What happened today at KUET will never lead to a good outcome. If students do not learn from the characteristics and ultimate fate of Chhatra League, they will meet the same end."
Meanwhile, Abdul Hannan Masud, the central chief organizer of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, also took to Facebook, stating, "The banned terrorist group Chhatra League-style brutal attack by Chhatra Dal at KUET only accelerates their political downfall in campuses."
In response to the incident, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's Khulna city and district branches announced a protest rally and demonstration at 8 PM. Similarly, the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal also called for a protest march at the same time, voicing their demands.
Students reported that there had been ongoing efforts to establish a Chhatra Dal committee at KUET, which had led to growing dissatisfaction among general students. Many had been advocating for a complete ban on student politics on campus. Earlier in the day, students organized a protest rally supporting their demand.
During the demonstration, students chanted slogans such as, "No place for student politics in KUET," "Our demand is clear— a politics-free campus," and "KUET will not be a hub for student politics." The procession moved through the student halls and reached the central mosque, where tensions escalated between the two groups.
Eventually, the verbal altercation turned into a violent clash, leading to chases and counter-chases. The confrontation quickly spread beyond the campus to adjacent roads near KUET. Following the incident, a tense atmosphere prevails on campus, with concerns over further unrest.
