Chittagong University (CU) authorities have permanently expelled Afsona Enayet Emi, a student of the Law Department from the 2018-19 academic session, for assaulting Assistant Proctor Dr. Kurban Ali. Additionally, her academic certificate has been revoked. In further disciplinary actions, two students were expelled for religious defamation, while nine others faced expulsion for assaulting teachers, students, and journalists.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the university’s Board of Residence, Health, and Disciplinary Committee held at the Vice Chancellor’s office on Thursday (February 13). The matter was confirmed to journalists by CU Proctor Dr. Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif.

Students expelled for two years include Elisa Swarna Chowdhury from the Institute of Marine Sciences (2017-18), Rojatul Jannat Nisha from the Department of Criminology and Police Science (2017-18), Fauzia Ahmed Polly Mazumdar from the Department of Communication and Journalism (2018-19), and Umme Habiba Brishti from the Department of Criminology and Police Science (2018-19).

Other students facing two-year expulsions are Farzana Yasmin Putul from the Department of Banking and Insurance (2019-20), Jannatul Mawa Mithila from the Department of Criminology and Police Science (2020-21), Sumaiya Sikder from the Department of Marketing (2021-22), Fatematuz Ashfia Nahar Esha from the Faculty of Fine Arts (2022-23), and Maisara Jahan Isha from the Department of Oceanography (2022-23).

Additionally, two students were expelled for religious defamation: SM Sanbim Sifat from the Department of Anthropology (2023-24) for two years and Jafrin Sultana Joyee from the same department (2020-21) for one year.

The disciplinary actions stemmed from an incident on February 5 when general students clashed with female students at Sheikh Hasina Hall over the destruction of a boat symbol and a mural of Sheikh Hasina. During the altercation, some female students assaulted protesters and journalists. Amid the chaos, Afsona Enayet Emi physically assaulted a faculty member while he attempted to restore order. Additionally, two students from the Anthropology Department were found guilty of religious defamation and were subsequently expelled.
