In the past 24 hours, 1,052 new cases of dengue have been reported across the country, with one additional death attributed to the disease. This brings the total number of fatalities due to dengue in 2024 to 422. Along with the rising death toll, 1,052 individuals have been admitted to hospitals, marking a significant increase in the number of patients seeking treatment. The total number of hospital admissions for dengue this year has now reached 82,120.
The Health Emergency Operations Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services issued a press release on Tuesday, November 19, updating the public on the current situation. The release reported that one more dengue-related death occurred in the past 24 hours. To date, the number of dengue-related deaths in Bangladesh this year stands at 422.
Currently, 3,993 dengue patients are hospitalized across various government and private hospitals in the country. Among these, 1,620 patients are being treated in Dhaka, while the remaining 2,373 are spread across various other divisions outside the capital. The spread of dengue continues to be significant in both urban and rural areas.
The press release further revealed the distribution of new hospital admissions across different regions. In the Barishal division, 85 new patients were admitted, while 137 new cases were reported in the Chattogram division. Outside of Dhaka city corporation areas, the Dhaka division saw 171 new admissions. In Dhaka North City, 242 new patients were admitted, and in Dhaka South City, 151 patients were hospitalized. Other divisions like Khulna, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Rangpur, and Sylhet also reported new cases, with 140, 74, 35, 12, and 5 new patients respectively.
The new hospital admissions have revealed that 66.65% of the patients are men, while 33.34% are women. This gender distribution is consistent with previous patterns observed in the outbreak. Despite the rise in new cases, there is a glimmer of hope as 1,067 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery in the last 24 hours. So far this year, 77,705 patients have successfully recovered and been released from hospitals.
The Health Directorate continues to monitor the situation closely as the outbreak shows no signs of abating. Efforts are being intensified to control mosquito breeding grounds and educate the public about preventive measures, but the rising number of cases indicates that the battle against dengue remains ongoing.
As the year progresses, the government and health authorities are working together to manage the public health crisis, ensuring that proper care is available for those affected and implementing strategies to curb the further spread of the disease. The high number of hospitalizations and fatalities underscores the urgency of addressing this public health threat effectively.
