Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, has stated that the government aims to hold elections as soon as possible, possibly as early as December this year. He mentioned that preparations are underway to ensure a smooth electoral process.

Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Thursday (February 13), Dr. Yunus made these remarks during a session moderated by CNN journalist Becky Anderson.

In response to Anderson’s questions, Dr. Yunus explained that 15 different reform commissions have been formed, focusing on various sectors such as law enforcement, police, the constitution, and elections. These commissions have submitted reports with different recommendations, which are currently under review to build consensus.

Dr. Yunus emphasized that discussions are ongoing with political parties to finalize a charter based on agreed-upon recommendations. Once these reforms are implemented, elections will be conducted as soon as possible, potentially in December.

He further stated that Bangladesh had been in a state of devastation, but efforts are being made to rebuild gradually. The country’s economy, social structure, and administration had all deteriorated, and the interim government is working to restore stability.

Highlighting the economic crisis, he pointed out that the banking sector had collapsed, with $16 billion siphoned off from banks and foreign reserves severely depleted. Restoring the economy is a priority, followed by stabilizing law and order and strengthening institutions.

When asked if he intended to stay in power beyond the elections, Dr. Yunus reiterated that he had no such plans. He assured that once an elected government takes charge, he would return to his previous work, which he finds fulfilling.
