Akhtar Hossain, the Member Secretary of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has strongly opposed any possibility of the Awami League gaining political ground within their platform. Speaking at a press briefing on Friday night following a closed-door meeting with party organizers at the Rangpur Chamber Building, Hossain asserted that those responsible for what he called “genocide and crimes against humanity” should never be politically rehabilitated in Bangladesh.

In response to a question about potential attempts by Awami League members to affiliate with the NCP, Hossain was unequivocal. “If anyone from the Awami League dares to even show the courage to step into any NCP program, we will resist them,” he said, adding, “We will hand over any infiltrators to the law. Those who imposed fascism on Bangladesh have lost the moral right to do politics here.”

Addressing queries about the relationship between the NCP and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hossain clarified that the NCP, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and the National Citizens’ Committee are all independent entities. According to him, the NCP will continue its operations as a political party, while the other two platforms will focus on fulfilling the public’s desire for systemic change. He emphasized that each organization has distinct goals but is united by a common vision for democratic transformation in the country.

The recent diplomatic meeting between Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangkok also came up during the discussion. Akhtar Hossain acknowledged Yunus’ statements during the meeting and expressed approval of his articulation of the people’s aspirations. However, he stressed that rhetoric alone is insufficient. He called on the interim government to take decisive international steps to bring those responsible—referring to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—to justice.

Supporting this sentiment, NCP's chief northern organizer Sarjis Alam said that Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the ideal candidate to serve as the Prime Minister for the next five years. “Professor Yunus has the qualifications and global recognition that make him the right choice for leading the nation,” he remarked.

Also present at the gathering were NCP’s Joint Chief Organizer Farzana Dina, Rangpur-based organizer Alomgir Noyon, and several leaders from the Democratic Student Council, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and the National Citizens’ Committee. The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the NCP’s stance on political accountability and its vision for a reformed democratic landscape in Bangladesh.
