The northern district of Dinajpur is experiencing an intense cold spell, with nighttime temperatures steadily declining over the past several days. While the sun occasionally breaks through, the biting winds and icy cold air at night are amplifying the severity of winter in the region. Though thick fog is absent, the nights have grown colder, adding to the discomfort for residents.

On Thursday morning, January 9, the Dinajpur Weather Office recorded a temperature of 10.3 degrees Celsius at 9 a.m. This marks a sharp decline from the previous day, January 8, when the district experienced a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.

A field visit early in the morning revealed that despite the lack of fog, icy winds were sweeping through the area. Some residents were seen lighting small fires in an attempt to keep warm. The cold winds and bone-chilling temperatures have left many people struggling to cope. Except for essential activities, most residents are refraining from stepping out of their homes. However, those who must meet family needs or seek work are braving the harsh conditions despite the challenges.

The severe cold has also significantly reduced activity in usually busy streets, markets, and public spaces. Many roads and marketplaces appeared almost deserted, with few people venturing out. Even during the daytime, when sunlight remains elusive, the cold persists, causing many workers to stay home. In the early hours, a light layer of mist could be seen, forcing vehicles on the roads to use headlights for navigation.

Meanwhile, local hospitals are witnessing an uptick in cold-related illnesses, with children and the elderly being the most vulnerable. The influx of patients has added strain to healthcare facilities, as people seek treatment for respiratory and other seasonal ailments.

Tofazzal Hossain, the officer-in-charge of the Dinajpur Weather Office, shared insights into the prevailing weather conditions. He stated that cold winds are currently active in the district. While there is no significant fog, the sharp winds are intensifying the cold. On Thursday at 9 a.m., the temperature was recorded at 10.3 degrees Celsius, with 91 percent humidity. Over the past 24 hours, the average wind speed was measured at 5 kilometers per hour.

The ongoing cold spell is expected to persist, with weather officials advising residents to take necessary precautions to stay warm and avoid exposure to the frigid conditions.
