In a stark warning, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has cautioned that the resurgence of religious extremism and the failure to curb radical activities could lead to the demise of democracy in Bangladesh. Speaking as the chief guest at an iftar event organized by the BNP at the Dhaka Ladies Club on Wednesday, Rahman emphasized that the rise of extremist factions and defeated fascist forces could once again bury the nation’s democratic aspirations.

Rahman highlighted that Bangladesh risks facing an image crisis in the global democratic community if religious extremism and radicalism are not effectively addressed. He stressed the need to uphold the country’s secular and democratic character by resisting extremist forces and ensuring that fugitive mafia groups responsible for atrocities are brought to justice.

Criticizing the current government, Rahman pointed out that the downfall of what he termed the "mafia government" was a result of its failure to hold fair elections. He argued that elections should not be viewed merely as a means for a political party to gain or retain power but as an opportunity for the people to elect their preferred representatives and form a truly representative government.

Rahman also noted that some government advisors and political parties are sending mixed signals, which could mislead the public if the aspirations of the people are ignored and secondary motives are prioritized. He called for a united effort to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure a fair political landscape in Bangladesh.
