The United States has canceled substantial financial aid to several countries, including Bangladesh and India. Among these cancellations is a $29 million program aimed at ensuring political stability in Bangladesh. According to a report by India Today on Sunday, February 16, the newly established U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) made this decision. Led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, this department has announced the funding withdrawal as part of a broader budget-cutting initiative.
Additionally, the United States has canceled a $21 million program designated for India. DOGE stated that the program aimed to increase voter turnout in India, while the $29 million allocated for Bangladesh was intended to strengthen its political landscape. The India Today report noted that the new U.S. administration, under the leadership of Donald Trump, is taking various measures to cut budgets. As a result, millions of dollars in funding have been withdrawn from several countries, including Bangladesh and India.
DOGE has also announced funding cancellations in other nations, including $10 million for Mozambique, $2.3 million for Cambodia, $14 million for Serbia, $22 million for Moldova, $39 million for two initiatives in Nepal, and $14 million for Mali.
On January 20, Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term as President. On his first day, he signed over a hundred executive orders, creating a major shift in policies. On January 25, a BBC report stated that the U.S. State Department had suspended all foreign aid activities and halted new assistance approvals.
Leaked documents cited by the BBC revealed that all U.S. foreign assistance programs would be temporarily suspended for the next 90 days. The suspended programs are being reviewed to determine their alignment with the current U.S. administration’s foreign policy objectives.
