With rising infections, authorities designate hospitals and ramp up preparations to manage potential outbreak.

Chattogram has reported 12 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, according to the latest update from the Civil Surgeon’s Office released on Friday afternoon.

Health officials confirmed that 91 samples were tested during this period, of which 12 returned positive results. Among the newly infected, 9 were identified at Metropolitan Hospital, while one case each was confirmed at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, National Hospital, and Chevron Diagnostic Centre.

This recent spike brings the total number of confirmed cases in Chattogram to 124 so far in June. Six patients have died from COVID-19-related complications this month, raising concerns among local health authorities.

In response to the increasing infection rate, Chattogram City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain convened an emergency preparedness meeting on June 11 with health department officials. The meeting aimed to reinforce the city’s readiness to handle a potential surge in cases.

As part of the new measures, two hospitals have been designated for treating COVID-19 patients: Chattogram General Hospital and Memon Hospital-2, which is operated by the Chattogram City Corporation. Additionally, an isolated ward is being prepared at Chattogram Medical College Hospital to accommodate infected patients and ensure adequate care.

Mayor Shahadat emphasized the importance of early readiness, urging both public and private healthcare institutions to remain alert and equipped. "We must act swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating," he stated during the meeting.

Health experts continue to advise the public to follow COVID-19 safety protocols, including mask-wearing in crowded areas, frequent handwashing, and avoiding large gatherings. They also stress the need for those experiencing symptoms to get tested promptly to prevent further community spread.

As the situation evolves, the Chattogram health department is closely monitoring case trends and coordinating with relevant agencies to strengthen testing, isolation, and treatment capacities across the region.
