BNP Leader Demands Legal Action Against Those Responsible for Controversial Election; Warns Against Internal Misconduct

Mostafa Zaman, Member Secretary of BNP’s Dhaka North Metropolitan unit, has called for the formation of a special commission to investigate what he described as the "black election" of 2018. He demanded that those responsible for conducting the allegedly fraudulent election be identified and brought under the law.

He made the remarks on Friday afternoon while distributing leaflets highlighting BNP’s 31-point agenda in the Kawla area under the jurisdiction of the Airport Police Station. Leaders and activists of the BNP’s local units were present during the campaign.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Mostafa Zaman stated, “According to party directives, I and my fellow activists are actively campaigning across various areas. The country is currently in a state of uncertainty—businesses are stagnating, and the general public is uneasy. There are vested groups conspiring to prevent the next election from taking place.”

He strongly emphasized the need for accountability over the 2018 general elections, which BNP has long claimed were marred by irregularities, voter suppression, and rigging. “We believe it is crucial to form a commission that will identify those who orchestrated and enabled the 2018 election fraud, and take appropriate legal action against them,” he said.

When asked about allegations of extortion by individuals misusing the party’s name, Zaman was unequivocal. “We have taken a strict stance against anyone involved in such misconduct. Several leaders and workers of Dhaka North BNP who faced credible accusations have already been expelled. They are no longer allowed to participate in any of the party's activities or organizational roles.”

He reiterated BNP’s position on internal discipline and clean politics, stating that such actions were necessary to maintain the party’s credibility and focus on the broader national cause.

The leaflet campaign, part of BNP’s ongoing nationwide outreach, included participation from activists and leaders from various units including Turag, Uttar Khan, Dakshin Khan, and Airport police station jurisdictions. They joined in spreading awareness about BNP’s 31-point reform proposals aimed at restoring democracy, ensuring fair elections, and addressing governance failures.

The campaign also highlighted the party’s demand for a neutral election-time government, reform of the Election Commission, and safeguarding civil rights—key pillars of BNP’s political roadmap leading up to the next general elections.

Mostafa Zaman concluded by urging party workers to remain vigilant, united, and proactive in exposing corruption and resisting any attempt to derail the democratic process.
