Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the interim government, has emphasized the importance of accurately documenting the atrocities committed during the authoritarian rule of ousted leader Sheikh Hasina. These include the crackdown on protesters at Shapla Chattar, the police brutality following the verdict against Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, and the extrajudicial killings that occurred over the years.
Dr. Yunus made these remarks during a meeting with Guinn Lewis, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, and Huma Khan, Senior Human Rights Advisor at the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Sunday, March 2.
The Chief Advisor stated that proper documentation of all atrocities committed against the people is essential. Without accurate records, it would be difficult to uncover the truth and ensure justice for the victims.
During the meeting, Resident Coordinator Lewis assured that the United Nations is ready to provide technical assistance to document these human rights violations and help build the capacity of Bangladeshi institutions. She described this as a crucial step in preventing such incidents in the future and establishing the truth.
Dr. Yunus thanked the UN for publishing an investigative report on human rights violations and abuses during the protests in July and August 2024. He expressed his appreciation for the timely release of the report, acknowledging that it was not an easy task.
Lewis informed the Chief Advisor that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk would brief member states on the report during the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council on March 5. She also expressed hope that UN Secretary-General António Guterres would bring global attention back to the Rohingya crisis during his upcoming visit to Bangladesh, especially as financial support for the refugees continues to decline.
Lewis highlighted the growing concern over the reduction in financial aid for the Rohingya refugees. She noted that $15 million is required every month just to ensure food supplies for the Rohingyas, in addition to meeting other basic needs.
UN Secretary-General Guterres is scheduled to visit Bangladesh from March 13 to 16. His visit is expected to address critical issues, including the Rohingya crisis and the need for sustained international support.
Dr. Yunus’s call for documenting atrocities underscores the importance of accountability and justice in addressing past human rights violations. Accurate records are essential not only for historical purposes but also for ensuring that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
The meeting between Dr. Yunus and the UN officials reflects the ongoing efforts to address human rights issues in Bangladesh. The UN’s involvement in documenting violations and providing technical assistance highlights the international community’s role in supporting justice and accountability.
The Chief Advisor’s remarks also shed light on the challenges faced by Bangladesh in dealing with its recent history of authoritarian rule. The crackdown on dissent, police brutality, and extrajudicial killings have left deep scars on the nation, and addressing these issues is crucial for building a more just and democratic society.
The UN’s investigative report on human rights violations during the 2024 protests has been a significant step in uncovering the truth. By bringing these issues to light, the report has provided a foundation for further action and accountability.
As Bangladesh continues to grapple with its past, the international community’s support will be vital in ensuring justice for the victims and preventing future violations. The upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General Guterres is expected to reinforce this commitment and bring renewed attention to the challenges facing the country.
In conclusion, Dr. Yunus’s emphasis on documenting atrocities and ensuring accountability is a critical step in addressing the legacy of authoritarian rule in Bangladesh. With the support of the United Nations and the international community, there is hope for justice, reconciliation, and a brighter future for the nation.
