The interim government has decided to cancel the 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Peace Prize,' a prestigious award established to honor global contributions to peace and development. The decision was made during a meeting of the Advisory Council chaired by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.

The award, approved by the previous Awami League government on May 20, 2024, was intended to recognize individuals or organizations worldwide for their efforts in promoting peace, eradicating hunger and poverty, and preventing wars. However, no recipient had been awarded the prize since its inception.

According to the now-revoked policy, the award was to be given biennially to individuals or institutions making significant contributions to global peace. The prize included a cash award of $100,000, a 50-gram 18-carat gold medal, and a certificate of recognition.

The interim government's decision to cancel the award comes just 10 months after its approval, marking a significant shift in the country's approach to international peace recognition initiatives. No official reason for the cancellation has been provided yet.
