Pratul Mukhopadhyay, the eminent lyricist, composer, and singer best known for his iconic song "Ami Banglay Gaan Gai," has passed away at the age of 83. After being critically ill and hospitalized for several days, he breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the ICU of SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.
The veteran singer was admitted to the hospital in the first week of January due to serious health concerns. Reports indicated that he had suffered sudden nosebleeds, prompting examinations by neurology and ENT specialists. Despite receiving intensive medical care, his condition deteriorated over time.
Even in his hospital bed, the resilient artist sang "Ami Banglay Gaan Gai" for the attending doctors, displaying his undying passion for music. However, about a week ago, he experienced severe respiratory distress, which was later diagnosed as a heart attack. His health rapidly declined, leading to his transfer to the cardiology department, where doctors detected a severe lung infection. Despite all efforts, he could not recover, and the world lost a prominent voice of mass music.
Born on June 25, 1942, in Barisal, then a part of undivided Bengal, Pratul Mukhopadhyay migrated to India with his family during the Partition. From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in music, composing tunes for his own lyrics. Among his numerous musical contributions, "Ami Banglay Gaan Gai" remains his most celebrated work, first released in March 2011.
Mukhopadhyay's illustrious career featured several notable albums, including "Pathore Pathore Nache Agun," "Jete Hobe," "Otho He, Swapner Feriwala," "Tomake Dekhechilam," "Swapanpore," "Anek Notun Bondhu Hok," "Hoyborol," "Dui Kanur Upakhyan," and "Andhar Name."
