Masud, a man widely known in the Sherpur district as "Don Masud" for his alleged involvement in cross-border smuggling and illegal sand extraction, has been released on bail just eight days after his arrest. His sudden return to the community has triggered widespread fear and frustration, particularly among local residents and activists who have protested against his activities.

On April 13, Masud was granted bail in connection with two separate cases. According to sources, he wasted no time in issuing threats against individuals who had taken part in protests and legal actions against him. Many fear that his reappearance may stifle further resistance and embolden criminal activities in the region once again.

Reports indicate that Masud had long been involved in illegal trade, including cattle smuggling across the border with India and unauthorized sand mining from the region's hilly rivers. His name had become synonymous with illicit activities in Sherpur’s border areas, particularly in the Sreebardi upazila.

Despite multiple reports and growing concerns, local authorities were allegedly unable to detain him for a significant period due to powerful backing. It wasn’t until April 5 that RAB-14 apprehended Masud and handed him over to the Sreebardi police. The following day, he was sent to district jail by court order.

Following his arrest, residents of Sherpur and Sreebardi staged human chains and demonstrations in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding a fair and firm legal response. The local community also held press conferences and filed multiple cases against him, including charges of assault and forging sand lease receipts.

However, Masud’s influence appeared undiminished. After securing bail on April 13, he returned to his hometown of Kornajhora in Sreebardi, welcomed by his associates with flower garlands and a motorcycle procession. His release has once again instilled anxiety among the population, particularly those who had publicly opposed him.

Social media platforms have reflected the public sentiment, with posts criticizing the justice system and expressing deep concern over Masud’s renewed threats. One post from the popular Facebook page “Amader Sreebardi” displayed a photo of Masud being garlanded upon his release, accompanied by a caption stating: “Notorious illegal sand trader Don Masud freed on bail just eight days after arrest.”

According to several locals, Masud’s associates have also begun issuing veiled threats to known protestors, warning them against further action. Residents now fear for their safety and question the effectiveness of the legal system in curbing criminal influence.

Despite multiple reports in both print and electronic media highlighting his alleged crimes, Masud managed to evade the law for years, often reinventing his public image. Following a regime change on August 5, Masud reportedly shifted allegiances and began using the names of local BNP leaders to portray himself as politically connected, which many believe helped shield him from scrutiny.

While law enforcement agencies and local administration have been accused of inaction due to invisible pressure, concerned citizens continue to urge higher authorities to re-examine the case and ensure that justice prevails.

The people of Sherpur now await decisive action to restore their sense of security and trust in the rule of law.
