Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin emphasized the immense potential for expanding trade between Bangladesh and China’s Yunnan Province during a meeting with Yunnan Governor Wang Yubo on Sunday afternoon, April 20. The discussion took place at the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce in Dhaka, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and other priority sectors.
The Commerce Adviser stated that Bangladesh aims to harness this potential to elevate its friendly ties with Yunnan to new heights. He noted that both sides can benefit by expanding collaboration not only in trade but also in sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and tourism. He proposed several avenues for enhanced cooperation, including investment in agriculture drone technology, capacity building for trainers, pest management strategies, and the launch of experimental projects to boost agricultural productivity.
Tourism was another area of focus in the meeting. Sheikh Bashir Uddin pointed out the strong potential for domestic tourism development in Bangladesh and requested Yunnan’s support in leveraging its tourism expertise to help improve local tourism infrastructure. He invited Governor Wang to encourage more investment from Yunnan in this sector.
Governor Wang Yubo praised the current state of Bangladesh-China relations, noting that the recent visit of Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to China had contributed significantly to strengthening bilateral ties. He expressed Yunnan’s strong interest in building upon this momentum by further developing trade and investment relations with Bangladesh.
Highlighting Yunnan’s geographical proximity to Bangladesh, Governor Wang suggested that launching direct flights between Chattogram and Kunming would accelerate bilateral engagements. He stressed the importance of fostering people-to-people connections and cultural understanding between the two regions.
Governor Wang also mentioned the demand for Bangladeshi products in Yunnan, particularly seasonal fruits. He expressed interest in importing mangoes and hilsa fish from Bangladesh to meet growing consumer demand in the Chinese province.
On the topic of tourism, Wang shared that Yunnan is a globally renowned destination, attracting nearly 700 million tourists each year due to its natural beauty. He assured that Yunnan would be willing to support Bangladesh in developing its own tourism sector and also pledged to explore further cooperation in the areas of education and healthcare.
The meeting was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, and CEO of the Bangladesh Tourism Board Abu Taher Mohammad Jaber.
