The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has clarified that it is not planning any immediate political movement, placing its current focus on establishing an interim government to facilitate a credible national election. Nazrul Islam Khan, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee and liaison committee, expressed these views on Saturday afternoon after a meeting with the 12-party alliance at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Speaking to the press around 3:15 PM, Khan emphasized that the BNP is committed to fulfilling public expectations through a peaceful and democratic transition. He said the party is hopeful that an interim government will be formed to ensure the next national election is free, fair, and participatory. According to him, this step is essential to restoring democratic norms and allowing people to freely express their electoral will.
Khan also strongly criticized the ruling Awami League, accusing it of fascist governance and committing acts of violence against civilians. He remarked that the ruling party should be held accountable for what he described as genocide and crimes against humanity. He stated that justice must be served for the various repressive measures and alleged human rights violations that have taken place under its rule.
The meeting brought together leaders from the 12-party alliance, all of whom echoed the BNP's concerns about the current political climate and the need for electoral reforms. Among those present were Mustafa Jamal Haider, Chairman of the National Party; Shahadat Hossain Selim, Chairman of Bangladesh LDP; and Syed Ehsanul Huda, Chairman of the Bangladesh National Party, among others. These leaders expressed solidarity with the BNP’s stance and reiterated the importance of forming a neutral interim government to oversee the upcoming election.
Throughout the discussion, alliance leaders emphasized that the people of Bangladesh desire a democratic process where their votes matter and their voices are heard. They noted that any meaningful election must be held under conditions that ensure a level playing field for all political parties. The alliance warned that without such a framework, the credibility of the next election would be severely undermined.
Nazrul Islam Khan reiterated the BNP’s position that the country's future cannot be determined through political suppression or manipulated elections. Instead, he argued, national stability and growth depend on inclusive governance that respects the people’s right to choose their representatives. The BNP, he said, remains firm in its commitment to achieving this goal through peaceful political processes.
The meeting concluded with a shared call for national unity among opposition forces, as they continue to push for an electoral system that reflects the will of the people. The leaders agreed to maintain open communication and coordination in the coming months, as the nation approaches a critical juncture in its democratic journey.
