Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his death on Monday, April 21. The announcement was made through the Vatican’s official television channel, where Cardinal Kevin Farrell addressed the public with deep sorrow.
“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness that I inform you our Holy Father Francis is no more. At 7:35 AM this morning, the Bishop of Rome returned to his Creator,” Cardinal Farrell stated in the televised message.
Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina. Before ascending to the papacy, he served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He was appointed as a cardinal in 2001 and was widely recognized for his humility, pastoral care, and commitment to social justice.
His papal journey began in March 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. During the conclave held to elect a new pope, Bergoglio was chosen and took the name Francis. He became the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to assume the role of the pontiff.
Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis was regarded as a transformative and empathetic figure in the Catholic Church. His leadership extended beyond doctrinal boundaries, as he spoke out on issues concerning climate change, poverty, global inequality, and peace. He was widely appreciated not only by Catholics but also by people of various faiths for his emphasis on human dignity and compassion.
Francis is remembered as a reformer who sought to bring transparency and simplicity to the papal office. He advocated for a Church that is close to the poor, emphasized mercy over judgment, and worked toward improving interfaith dialogue.
The Pope had been suffering from several health complications in recent years, including respiratory and mobility issues. Despite his physical challenges, he continued to serve with unwavering dedication until his final days.
News of his passing has been met with an outpouring of grief from Catholic communities and believers around the world. Tributes and condolences continue to flow in from global leaders, religious figures, and the faithful, marking the end of an era for the Catholic Church.
