Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed his expectation that Bangladesh will take measures to ensure the safety of its minority communities, emphasizing that such actions align with Bangladesh's own interests. Speaking during a question-answer session in the Lok Sabha on Friday, December 13, Jaishankar addressed concerns raised by Congress MP Manish Tewari regarding incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh.

Jaishankar highlighted India's consistent concern over the issue, pointing out that it has been raised in recent diplomatic engagements, including during the Indian Foreign Secretary's visit to Dhaka. He acknowledged Bangladesh's significance as a key development partner for India but underscored the ongoing challenges minorities face in the country.

Addressing the broader context of regional development, Jaishankar remarked on the importance of maintaining mutually beneficial and stable relationships in South Asia, particularly with the formation of a new government in Bangladesh. He expressed optimism about deepening bilateral cooperation under such a framework.

Jaishankar also elaborated on India's role in various regional development projects, noting its contributions to neighboring countries, excluding Pakistan and China. He emphasized that India's initiatives in Bangladesh reflect its commitment to fostering stronger regional ties.

The Indian Foreign Minister reiterated the need for Bangladesh to act in its own interest by safeguarding minority rights, framing it as a fundamental aspect of sustainable bilateral and regional stability.
