Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashir Uddin has highlighted the potential for exponential growth in trade between Bangladesh and Türkiye. He stated that Türkiye has expressed keen interest in investing in sectors such as renewable energy, machinery, infrastructure, and construction.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with a Turkish delegation led by Türkiye's Trade Minister, Professor Dr. Ömer Bolat, at the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday, December 9, Sheikh Bashir Uddin emphasized the opportunities for strengthening bilateral trade relations.

The trade advisor explained that Turkish representatives have shown interest in several key sectors, and discussions on implementing these investments will take place in the upcoming Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting.

According to the latest figures, Bangladesh exports goods worth approximately $500 million to Türkiye annually and imports around $450 million in return. Over the past year, Bangladesh's exports to Türkiye have increased by nearly 30%, showcasing a promising trend in trade growth.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin noted that with a combined population of around 270 million, the trade volume between the two countries remains far below its potential. To harness this opportunity, critical sectors have been identified, and actionable plans will be developed during joint commission discussions.

He further mentioned that Bangladesh is open to allocating a dedicated Special Economic Zone for Türkiye, should they choose to pursue larger investments. Currently, Turkish firms have invested approximately $300 million in Bangladesh across various sectors, including garments, pharmaceuticals, construction, and food processing. Discussions have also touched upon expanding these investments.

Regarding the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) card distribution, Sheikh Bashir Uddin stated that the number of cards has been reduced from 10 million to 6.3 million to address previous irregularities. An additional 3.7 million cards will be issued after proper verification, with the possibility of increasing the number if needed.

On preparations for the Ramadan market, he assured that there would be no supply shortages as adequate stockpiles are in place to meet consumer demands.

The meeting was attended by Commerce Ministry Secretary (Routine Charge) Md. Abdur Rahim Khan and other relevant officials.
