In Washington, D.C., a collision between an American Airlines passenger plane and a U.S. military helicopter has resulted in no survivors among those on board. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the fatalities, as did the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Following the incident, Trump expressed his condolences while criticizing the Biden administration for what he called a failure of leadership. He attributed the crash to unqualified personnel being in charge but provided no evidence to support his claim.
Authorities have recovered the flight recorders, commonly known as black boxes, from the wreckage of the American Airlines plane. These include the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. The NTSB, an independent U.S. government agency, will now analyze the data as part of its investigation into the crash.
The collision occurred on Wednesday night near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The American Airlines plane, which was operating a domestic flight, collided midair with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter before both aircraft plunged into the icy Potomac River.
A total of 64 passengers and crew members were aboard the American Airlines aircraft, while the Black Hawk helicopter had three personnel on board. The NTSB is leading the investigation into the tragic accident.
