After 15 months of relentless conflict, a ceasefire is set to take effect in Gaza today, Sunday, January 19, at 12:30 PM. Both sides have agreed to an initial 42-day truce as part of the arrangement.
As per the ceasefire agreement, the first phase will involve the release of three Israeli hostages in exchange for 737 Palestinian prisoners, most of whom have been held in Israeli jails.
On October 7, 2023, an attack led by Hamas in Israel resulted in 251 hostages being taken. Under the terms of the ceasefire, 33 Israeli hostages will be freed in the first phase of the agreement.
The ceasefire deal was brokered through the mediation of Qatar, the United States, and Egypt. The 15-month-long conflict has taken a devastating toll, with approximately 47,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, most of whom were women and children.
