A fashion show in Saudi Arabia has sparked significant controversy after showcasing a “glass installation” that some perceived as resembling the Kaaba, Islam's holiest site. The event, part of the annual Riyadh Season, has drawn criticism from Islamic scholars, social media users, and mainstream Arab media, with accusations of disrespect toward Islamic values.

The controversy erupted after images and videos of a cube-shaped glass installation from the event circulated online. Critics argued that the structure mimicked the sacred Kaaba, calling it a blatant violation of Islamic sanctity. Prominent religious figures condemned the display, accusing the organizers of dishonoring Islam.

One notable critic, Canadian Islamic scholar Tariq Abd al-Halim, shared his concerns on Telegram, calling the event an example of "polytheistic practices" creeping into the Arabian Peninsula. Moroccan religious leader Al-Hassan bin Ali Al-Kittani labeled the incident a sign of "moral decay and corruption," further criticizing the silence of many religious authorities.

Saudi Arabia’s Anti-Rumor Authority, a platform dedicated to countering online misinformation, refuted the allegations. Officials clarified that the installation was merely a glass cube with no intended resemblance to the Kaaba. “This is a baseless rumor,” stated the authority, emphasizing that the claims of religious disrespect were unfounded.

The country’s state media also dismissed the criticism, labeling it as an attempt to tarnish Saudi Arabia's reputation.

Despite these denials, critics extended their outrage to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, accusing him of promoting activities that undermine Islamic traditions. Some hardline voices claimed the event reflected his broader agenda of liberalizing Saudi society. A Syrian scholar, Abdel Rahman Al-Idrisi, alleged that the fashion show’s controversial elements were orchestrated under the Crown Prince’s directives.

Supporters of extremist ideologies seized the moment to launch personal attacks on the Crown Prince, calling him a “traitor to Islam” and accusing him of collusion with Western influences.

Cultural Context: Riyadh Season

Riyadh Season, an annual celebration of entertainment, culture, and sports, aims to showcase Saudi Arabia's evolving cultural landscape. The 2024 edition featured numerous events, including a fashion show by Lebanese designer Elie Saab. However, the event drew criticism not just for the controversial installation but also for its timing. Many accused Saudi Arabia of insensitivity for hosting such events while conflicts raged in Gaza and Lebanon.

A London-based Arabic news outlet, Rai Al-Youm, highlighted the criticism, accusing the organizers of ignoring the ongoing humanitarian crises. Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), also became a battleground for opposing views. One user remarked sarcastically, “While genocide unfolds in Gaza, Saudi Arabia hosts dancers and singers.”

The controversy underscores the tension between Saudi Arabia's push for modernization under Vision 2030 and its deeply rooted Islamic traditions. Events like Riyadh Season reflect the kingdom's desire to transform its global image, but they also reveal the cultural and religious sensitivities that continue to challenge this transformation.

As debates rage on, the incident has reignited broader discussions about the balance between tradition and progress in the region.
