In a major operation led by the Department of Naval Transport, 68 ships and a leather factory in Abhaynagar, Jashore, were inspected and fined for various irregularities. The crackdown, which took place on the Bhairab River, resulted in penalties totaling Tk 2.8 lakh. The operation, conducted by two executive magistrates, Thandar Kamruzzaman and Anindya Guha, was supported by the Navy, Coast Guard, and Naval Police.
The magistrates highlighted that the operation aimed to address issues such as the shortage of lighter ships, illegal stockpiling of food products, and restoring order on the waterways. During the inspection, 12 ships were fined Tk 1.8 lakh for violations, including operating with unqualified masters and lacking proper survey certificates. The remaining 56 ships were cleared after their documents were verified.
Additionally, an unnamed leather factory was fined Tk 1 lakh for discharging waste directly into the river, lacking an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), and having incomplete documentation. The Department of Naval Transport has vowed to continue such operations to ensure compliance with regulations.
