A powerful earthquake struck a remote Himalayan region in Tibet on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 53 people dead and 62 others injured. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.1, hit at 9:05 AM local time, followed by several aftershocks.
The quake severely impacted several towns and villages, including Changshuo Township, Kuluo Township, and Dingri County’s Kuoguo Township, where fatalities have been reported. The earthquake's tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of northern India, as indicated by the USGS’s seismic map.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in a remote area of the Tibetan Plateau, near the border with Nepal, as confirmed by both the USGS and China’s Earthquake Network Center. The region, known for its rugged terrain, is one of the most isolated in Tibet.
According to China’s state news agency, Xinhua, several houses in rural areas collapsed as a result of the quake, causing widespread damage. Local authorities have mobilized rescue operations to search for survivors and provide assistance to the affected communities.
The nearest major city to the epicenter is Shigatse, located approximately 180 kilometers away. Shigatse is home to the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the second-highest spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism after the Dalai Lama. The city holds significant religious and cultural importance for Tibetan Buddhists.
The earthquake has caused major disruption in the region, with the full extent of the damage still unclear. Local government agencies are working to provide aid to those affected, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors amidst the rubble. The situation remains critical as aftershocks continue to impact the region.
