Donald Trump will be sworn in today, January 20, as the 47th President of the United States. The inauguration ceremony will take place inside the Capitol Hill complex due to cold weather, as confirmed by Trump himself. This shift from the traditional outdoor ceremony marks the first time in nearly 40 years that the event will take place inside the Capitol building. The last time this occurred was in 1985 when President Ronald Reagan was inaugurated due to extreme cold weather.
Trump’s second inauguration symbolizes not only the conclusion of the current administration but also the beginning of the Trump-Vance administration. This occasion is filled with political significance, marking both the transfer of power and the start of a new chapter for the country’s future.
Following his oath of office, Trump’s administration plans to implement stricter immigration laws across the country. Several world leaders have been invited to the event, including China’s President Xi Jinping. However, instead of attending, China has sent Vice President Han Zheng to represent the country. This marks the first time that a senior Chinese leader will directly witness the inauguration of a U.S. president. It’s noteworthy that traditionally, foreign leaders are not invited to attend presidential inauguration ceremonies, but Trump has broken this precedent. According to History.com, the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution established January 20 as the official inauguration day, a change made in 1933.
Following the swearing-in, Trump will address the nation, outlining the goals and priorities of his new administration. He will then sign important documents in the Presidents’ Room of the Capitol building and attend a luncheon organized by Congress. Later in the day, a grand procession from Capitol Hill to the White House will take place. In the evening, Trump will deliver speeches at three formal inaugural balls.
Notable figures attending the ceremony include Congress members, outgoing President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the U.S., Asad Alam Siam, will also attend the inauguration.
The event will feature musical performances by Carrie Underwood, who will sing "America the Beautiful" to honor the occasion. American disco group The Village People and country singer Lee Greenwood will also perform. The Village People’s iconic song “YMCA,” which was used during Trump’s election campaign, will be part of the festivities.
Trump’s inauguration is seen as a departure from traditional norms, as he continues to break conventions established in past presidencies. His decision to invite foreign leaders to attend, including figures like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Argentine President Javier Milei, showcases his unique approach to international relations. While Meloni has confirmed her attendance, Milei has already expressed his intention to be present.
Despite some leaders declining the invitation, such as Hungarian President Viktor Orban, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump’s choice of invitees reflects his strategy to strengthen his influence on the global political stage. Orban’s office stated that he would not be able to attend, but Trump’s efforts to shape his international image are evident through the diverse array of leaders and dignitaries he has invited.
