Five people have died in Germany due to fireworks-related incidents during English New Year celebrations, according to reports. Earlier updates confirmed four fatalities from various accidents across the country. In Berlin, authorities conducted overnight operations, resulting in 330 arrests, as reported by AFP on Wednesday.

Florian Nath, a spokesperson for the police, stated that 13 members of the law enforcement agencies were injured in the incidents, with one officer in critical condition. Despite the casualties, Nath noted that no large-scale violence occurred compared to previous years.

The use of fireworks during New Year celebrations is a long-standing tradition in Germany. However, it often results in numerous injuries each year, sparking ongoing debates over environmental and noise pollution concerns. Calls for a ban on fireworks have been a recurring issue in public discourse.

In Paderborn, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, a 24-year-old man lost his life following a fireworks explosion. Local police revealed that the victim had constructed the explosive device himself. Meanwhile, in the Saxony region’s town of Oschatz, a 45-year-old man died after sustaining a severe head injury while attempting to ignite a "pyrotechnic bomb." Authorities confirmed the explosive was categorized as F4 fireworks, which require special authorization for use.

As the nation grapples with these incidents, questions surrounding the regulation and safety of fireworks remain a significant concern.
