The United States and India are eager to see democracy restored in Bangladesh as quickly as possible, according to Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India. In an interview with Indian news outlet WION, Garcetti expressed optimism about democracy’s role in shaping a new chapter for Bangladesh.
Speaking about the collaborative efforts of India and the United States on the global stage, he emphasized that the current level of cooperation between the two nations is unprecedented. “This is not something from the past. The way we are working together now has never happened before,” he remarked.
This marks the first time Garcetti has commented on Bangladesh's elections since assuming his position as US Ambassador to India. He stated that both India and the US share a common vision for a peaceful and democratic South Asia, underscoring their mutual commitment to this principle.
Garcetti also stressed the importance of coordination between the two nations in achieving this goal. He clarified their stance against any form of persecution of religious minorities, whether in Bangladesh or elsewhere. “We firmly believe that there should be no persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh or any country,” he said.
The ambassador highlighted the need to seize the opportunity for advancing democracy and human rights in Bangladesh. He reiterated the shared values of India and the US in promoting peace, inclusivity, and stability across the South Asian region.
Garcetti’s remarks reflect a unified approach by two of the world's largest democracies toward ensuring democratic governance and protecting minority rights in Bangladesh, as part of their broader commitment to regional harmony.
